DESCRIPTION:BHC partners with Essential Church School to offer this special ceremony for the homeschool community. \n\n\n\nThis special day typically includes a slideshow of our graduates\, a personal recognition by parents\, opportunities to share accomplishments through presentations and table displays\, and a special cake reception for family and friends. \n\n\n\nFor your graduate to participate\,\n\n\n\nNEEDED BY APRIL 1 \n\n\n\nOrder any needed caps/gowns/tassels by April 1st (click here for options).  We encourage all graduates to have a cap and tassel.  Our group order helps keep cost low. \n\n\n\n\nOrder Now\n\n\n\n\nNEEDED BY MAY 1 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nPay the graduation fee and RSVP below with graduate’s full name for diploma and preferred name for cake.  Space is limited.\n\n\n\nEmail 3 pictures of your graduate to us by May 1st.  Make sure you include at least 1 baby photo.  Email to info@birminghamhomeschoolers.com\n\n\n\nInvite family and friends to join us for this special day!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAQS\n\n\n\nWhat does the graduation fee cover?  Event space coordination\, personalized cake reception\, and printing costs. \n\n\n\nWhat do graduates usually wear?  Most graduates wear “church” clothes  with a cap\, gown\, and tassel.  We encourage all graduates to have at least a cap/tassel. \n\n\n\nWhat do parents normally say at presentation of diploma?  We have parents come up with their graduate to present the diploma.  Most parents share about the things that make them proud of their graduate\, but often it is a simple handoff and hug.  Please plan to keep your presentation to 3-5 minutes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDO NOT CONTACT the church for information about the graduation.  They are only providing our event space.  They are not handling ANY of the graduation details or group arrangements.  All questions should be directed to BHC at info@birminghamhomeschoolers.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DAY \n\n\n\nPlan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to set up your displays.  In the past\, parents have used presentation boards to display their graduate’s accomplishments with photos and examples of work from the school year.   Each graduate will receive about 2 feet of table space.  Space will be marked on the tables when you arrive. \n\n\n\nPlease note that helium balloons are not allowed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you enrolled with Essential Church School?  Please visit the school website for kindergarten graduation registration information before completing forms.  Essential members get a discounted rate.

SUMMARY:Ultimate Frisbee Pick-Up Games: Pelham
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for ultimate frisbee!  This is open to all ages\, as long as those participating are willing to abide by the Ultimate Frisbee “spirit of the game”\, see this link: https://usaultimate.org/spirit-of-the-game/\n\nBring water and a light and dark shirt (wear one\, bring the other) so we can help distinguish between teams.  No frisbee required\, but if you have an ultimate disc\, great.\n\nWe practice tossing the frisbee for starters\, then break off into teams to play until 3:30.  Those who want a little more action or perhaps a little more competitive play can stay for a second round at 3:30 (last time just 30 minutes more).  Pelham city park has a playground and splash pad in this area so some of the kids have stayed to play at the playground when we finished.  Ages in the previous weeks have ranged from 8-14\, boys and girls.\n\nLocation: Pelham City Park near the dog park and playground.

DESCRIPTION:Share your knowledge and experiments! We are excited to offer the BHC Science Fair for the 2024-2025 school year for all ages and grade levels as well. We do require you to register your student’s project by September 18th if possible. The $5 registration fee will help BHC cover the expenses of the venue\, judges\, and prizes – yes\, this event includes some friendly competition! \nScience Fair Information\nAll projects must be a controlled research experiment that follows the scientific method. This is not for models or for research complications. If the project is not an experiment\, your student will receive constructive comments but will not be eligible for judging. Watch videos for more information about the scientific method: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information about controlled experiments: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE for lesson on Controlled Experiments. \n\n\n\nProject Ideas\n\nScienceBuddies.org – click on Find A Project Idea\, then browse by topic or grade level\nEducation.com/Science-Fair\nPinterest.com – just make sure it’s a controlled experiment\n\n\nScience Fair Guidelines\n\nMake sure the project is age appropriate. The student should understand what they are doing and be able to discuss it with you. The student should pick a project that they are interested in and do the work themselves as much as possible.\nPlease do not harm any living things for your project.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA student may enter just one project. Students may work together on a project\, but the project will be judged for the age group of the oldest child involved.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProjects will be judged and prizes awarded for winners. All participants will receive a certificate for participating.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll presentations must be in English and the student must be prepared to answer age-specific questions about their project during the judging process. Make sure to write everything in your own words to avoid plagiarism.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou do not have to have your project judged if you do not want to. Just mark that on the registration form.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe presentation must be presented on a tri-fold\, stand alone cardboard display board that can be found at Wal-Mart and other local stores for around $3.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease follow the below example as closely as possible to simplify judging. If the child cannot write\, someone else can write for them or they can draw pictures to demonstrate what they did. Photographs are also good to use.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can bring materials to show the judge\, but they must fit easily in front of the poster\, they must not need to be plugged in or require other resources\, and they must not make a mess.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn fair day\, please be there at 1:00 to get set up set up and ready for judging. The judges will walk around to each project and discuss with the student.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that the measurements for the poster board are 48″ long and 36″ tall. The diagram below has a mistake- the middle section measures 24″\, not 36″.

SUMMARY:Birmingham Art Museum Monthly Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:Birmingham Museum of Art Fieldtrips\n*Free*\n\n\nFall Dates:  September 24th\, October 22nd\, November 19th\n\n\nWe met monthly last school year and really saw the kids grow in their appreciation of art. My kids love it!\nWe’ll meet in the lobby (outside the gift shop) at 11 to begin a Scavenger Hunt for the children.\nDetails:\n-The older kids get in groups of two or three and “hunt” independently. The younger kids can be escorted by parents. If you are not comfortable letting your kid roam the museum unsupervised\, you can accompany them\, no problem. I would suggest independence for responsible 11 year olds and up.\n-I will explain the rules when we meet\, and encourage you to review the behavior guidelines on the BMA website with your kids in advance\n-I will have a small prize for the winning teams!\n\nThe magic of this is the repetition.  Every month we get more and more familiar with our museum\, and the works of art.  We notice more detail\, we begin to remember artist names and mediums and time periods.  We start forming a real relationship with the museum and the art.  This happens over time with hunting and competing with friends!  Our favorite last year was the Emoji theme.  We searched for art that represented each emoji\, or made us feel like the emoji.  It was a fun discussion afterward!

SUMMARY:Birmingham Art Museum Monthly Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here:  https://band.us/@artmuseum \nAlabama homeschoolers meet monthly at the Birmingham Museum of Art to develop art appreciation in our families. At 11am we gather outside of the gift shop to distribute materials and discuss the month’s challenge. The kids are divided into teams and sent off to explore. They “hunt” for a specific list of themed art in a BINGO- or scavenger-hunt style adventure. We vary the game themes\, goals\, and time expectations. There are prizes at the end when we meet to conclude our search. \nThe students are expected to be on their best behavior and to represent us homeschoolers well. No running\, touching\, or loud noises. Backpacks are generally not a good idea (risk knocking into art displays). Older kids are encouraged to explore with their team. Younger kids should be supervised by parents. \nOur past themes have included art mediums\, shapes/patterns\, seasonal\, emotions\, etc. \nMy heart for creating this recurring event is for the students to develop a relationship with the art. One visit will not accomplish this. We intend to go back month after month to encourage the kids to notice details\, connections\, and similarities and differences. I encourage my kids to study to compositions closely so that they can store it in the art gallery of their minds. Art appreciation can inspire creative ambitions\, expose us to new thoughts and faraway cultures\, and teach us to slow down and absorb the details of our environment. Its really not about the art\, its about growth.
