SUMMARY:Birmingham Art Museum Monthly Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here:  https://band.us/@artmuseum \nAlabama homeschoolers meet monthly at the Birmingham Museum of Art to develop art appreciation in our families. At 11am we gather outside of the gift shop to distribute materials and discuss the month’s challenge. The kids are divided into teams and sent off to explore. They “hunt” for a specific list of themed art in a BINGO- or scavenger-hunt style adventure. We vary the game themes\, goals\, and time expectations. There are prizes at the end when we meet to conclude our search. \nThe students are expected to be on their best behavior and to represent us homeschoolers well. No running\, touching\, or loud noises. Backpacks are generally not a good idea (risk knocking into art displays). Older kids are encouraged to explore with their team. Younger kids should be supervised by parents. \nOur past themes have included art mediums\, shapes/patterns\, seasonal\, emotions\, etc. \nMy heart for creating this recurring event is for the students to develop a relationship with the art. One visit will not accomplish this. We intend to go back month after month to encourage the kids to notice details\, connections\, and similarities and differences. I encourage my kids to study to compositions closely so that they can store it in the art gallery of their minds. Art appreciation can inspire creative ambitions\, expose us to new thoughts and faraway cultures\, and teach us to slow down and absorb the details of our environment. Its really not about the art\, its about growth.

We practice tossing the frisbee for starters\, then break off into teams to play until 3:30.  Those who want a little more action or perhaps a little more competitive play can stay for a second round at 3:30 (last time just 30 minutes more).  Pelham city park has a playground and splash pad in this area so some of the kids have stayed to play at the playground when we finished.  Ages in the previous weeks have ranged from 8-14\, boys and girls. \nLocation: Pelham City Park near the dog park and playground.

DESCRIPTION:The Trussville Public Library will be hosting a two-part ACT Prep class on October 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and October 13th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class will be conducted in person in the library auditorium. Saturday will be an extensive review session\, test taking tips\, and a practice essay\, and the Sunday will feature a practice test. SUMMARY:Birmingham Art Museum Monthly Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:Birmingham Museum of Art Fieldtrips\n*Free*\n\n\nFall Dates:  September 24th\, October 22nd\, November 19th\n\n\nWe met monthly last school year and really saw the kids grow in their appreciation of art. My kids love it!\nWe’ll meet in the lobby (outside the gift shop) at 11 to begin a Scavenger Hunt for the children.\nDetails:\n-The older kids get in groups of two or three and “hunt” independently. The younger kids can be escorted by parents. If you are not comfortable letting your kid roam the museum unsupervised\, you can accompany them\, no problem. I would suggest independence for responsible 11 year olds and up.\n-I will explain the rules when we meet\, and encourage you to review the behavior guidelines on the BMA website with your kids in advance\n-I will have a small prize for the winning teams!\n\nThe magic of this is the repetition.  Every month we get more and more familiar with our museum\, and the works of art.  We notice more detail\, we begin to remember artist names and mediums and time periods.  We start forming a real relationship with the museum and the art.  This happens over time with hunting and competing with friends!  Our favorite last year was the Emoji theme.  We searched for art that represented each emoji\, or made us feel like the emoji.  It was a fun discussion afterward!

DESCRIPTION:Share your knowledge and experiments! We are excited to offer the BHC Science Fair for the 2024-2025 school year for all ages and grade levels as well. We do require you to register your student’s project by September 18th if possible. The $5 registration fee will help BHC cover the expenses of the venue\, judges\, and prizes – yes\, this event includes some friendly competition! \nScience Fair Information\nAll projects must be a controlled research experiment that follows the scientific method. This is not for models or for research complications. If the project is not an experiment\, your student will receive constructive comments but will not be eligible for judging. The student should understand what they are doing and be able to discuss it with you. The student should pick a project that they are interested in and do the work themselves as much as possible.\nPlease do not harm any living things for your project.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA student may enter just one project. Students may work together on a project\, but the project will be judged for the age group of the oldest child involved.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProjects will be judged and prizes awarded for winners. All participants will receive a certificate for participating.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll presentations must be in English and the student must be prepared to answer age-specific questions about their project during the judging process. Make sure to write everything in your own words to avoid plagiarism.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou do not have to have your project judged if you do not want to. Just mark that on the registration form.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe presentation must be presented on a tri-fold\, stand alone cardboard display board that can be found at Wal-Mart and other local stores for around $3.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease follow the below example as closely as possible to simplify judging. If the child cannot write\, someone else can write for them or they can draw pictures to demonstrate what they did. Photographs are also good to use.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can bring materials to show the judge\, but they must fit easily in front of the poster\, they must not need to be plugged in or require other resources\, and they must not make a mess.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn fair day\, please be there at 1:00 to get set up set up and ready for judging. The judges will walk around to each project and discuss with the student.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that the measurements for the poster board are 48″ long and 36″ tall. The diagram below has a mistake- the middle section measures 24″\, not 36″.

DESCRIPTION:Come join us for ultimate frisbee!  This is open to all ages\, as long as those participating are willing to abide by the Ultimate Frisbee “spirit of the game”\, see this link: https://usaultimate.org/spirit-of-the-game/\n\nBring water and a light and dark shirt (wear one\, bring the other) so we can help distinguish between teams.  No frisbee required\, but if you have an ultimate disc\, great.\n\nWe practice tossing the frisbee for starters\, then break off into teams to play until 3:30.  Those who want a little more action or perhaps a little more competitive play can stay for a second round at 3:30 (last time just 30 minutes more).  Pelham city park has a playground and splash pad in this area so some of the kids have stayed to play at the playground when we finished.  Ages in the previous weeks have ranged from 8-14\, boys and girls.\n\nLocation: Pelham City Park near the dog park and playground.
