SUMMARY:Alabama Homeschool Prom
DESCRIPTION:Where?  Gabrella Manor \n\n\n\nWhen? First Thursday in May\, May 1\, 2025 \n\n\n\n8-11 pm \n\n\n\nDuration: 3 hr \n\n\n\n8-11 pm (note the start time\, it gets darker later in May and this also allows the kids to eat before Prom starts) \n\n\n\nCost: $70 per person (pay at the door)\, cash or check (if check make out to Gabrella Manor) \n\n\n\nOpen to any Homeschooler 9th grade and up\, and a date\, the date does not have to be homeschooled. Many kids come in groups that is fine as well. \n\n\n\nDress: Semi-formal:  boys need a suit or sport coat\, Most girls will be in a prom-type dress. \n\n\n\nNote: I trust the parents on the dress\, if the parents are ok with the dress\, I can be ok with the dress as well. \n\n\n\nSnacks and drinks provided\, NOT DINNER. \n\n\n\nWe have multiple Chaperones and everyone there who works at Gabrella is very familiar with our group by now and will have eyes open at all times. We have paid guards in uniform from the Sheriff’s Dept as well. Any parent who feels they simply must come with their child must pay to get in and be dressed for the dance. \n\n\n\nWe do allow parents to come in about 15 min before the dance to take photos and stay about 15 min after the dance begins\, then we ask them to leave if they did not pay to stay… \n\n\n\nPlease put this on your school and personal calendar\, and help spread the word to your group. Feel free to invite any other homeschool kids you know of. Getting the word out is the hardest part of the whole thing really!

There will be something for all ages with teens being the judges for the competition (if they are not participating). \n\n\n\nWe suggest that each student bring about 40 valentines to share\, but know that there will probably be more boxes than that! The playground area is super nice at this park\, and your students will probably work up an appetite. \n\n\n\nThis event is RAIN OR SHINE\, because we will be using the covered pavilion for the swap and box setup. But when lovable Bartholomew the bear knocks on the door\, chilled to the bone in the pouring rain\, he finds there is no room. Through playful storytelling audiences ages 0-5 years will learn valuable lessons about friendship\, cooperation\, and the importance of embracing differences. Join an interactive adventure that celebrates the magic of home\, no matter how big or small! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Biggest Little House in the Forest is Birmingham Children’s Theatre’s next installment of Theatre for Very Young Audiences (TVYA)\, where children ages 0 – 5 are able to explore the world around them through the magic of live theatre. Through repetition\, rhyme\, song\, and a lot of audience interaction\, this show invites young kids to not just watch but experience creative storytelling. This show is great for kinesthetic learners who use movement\, testing\, trial and error in a non-traditional learning to retain and recall information. The space is fully interactive\, and the kids have agency in the space to play\, learn\, and participate in the story at their own pace.

DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Alabama has registered with Scripps organization so homeschoolers in Alabama will have a way to participate in the national spelling bee. The winner of this state homeschool spelling bee will move on to the state spelling bee in Birmingham in March. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nState Homeschool Spelling BeeSaturday February 1\, 2025\, 1 pmFaulkner University Birmingham campus4524 Southlake Pkwy\, Birmingham AL 35244(near Valleydale Road and Interstate 65)(Weather date February 8) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year\, we will use the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s online testing platform to hold our Homeschool Alabama preliminary spelling bee via an online spelling test. This will be available January 1-12\, 2025. The top students (approximately 20) from this preliminary bee will advance to the state homeschool bee on February 1. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register your family here .   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe cost is $15 plus a 4% fee for credit card and web use\, for a total of $20.60. The deadline to register is on or before December 31\, 2024. After you register you will receive an email with word lists to study so the earlier you register\, the better for your student. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou may have a question about our registration closing by December 31\, because the national spelling bee allows registration through January. However\, the Alabama deadline to get our winner info to them is mid-February. So our deadline must be earlier than January 31. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is FREE to attend and support students at this spelling bee event.

They should be prepared to speak about their country while standing in front of their board or at the computer. This is a low-key way to practice public speaking skills.\nIn addition\, students may dress in traditional dress\, bring a treat to share\, show a traditional dance\, play music from that country\, etc. This is an opportunity for them to be creative!\nAny age may participate.\nStudents may focus on cultural or physical geography or both.\nMultiple students may work together on a single project.\nAll presentations must be in English and the student should be prepared to answer age-specific questions about their project during the open time where other students and parents can come see their project.\nTri-fold\, stand alone cardboard display boards can be found at Hobby Lobby for around $3.\nProjects should not need to be plugged in or require other resources\, and they must not make a mess.\nPresentations should be no longer than 5 minutes each.\nPlease register by November 20 so we can have a final number to prepare for appropriate space for everyone’s projects.\nOn fair day\, please be there at 2:00 to get set up.

SUMMARY:Birmingham Art Museum Monthly Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here:  https://band.us/@artmuseum \nAlabama homeschoolers meet monthly at the Birmingham Museum of Art to develop art appreciation in our families. At 11am we gather outside of the gift shop to distribute materials and discuss the month’s challenge. The kids are divided into teams and sent off to explore. They “hunt” for a specific list of themed art in a BINGO- or scavenger-hunt style adventure. We vary the game themes\, goals\, and time expectations. There are prizes at the end when we meet to conclude our search. \nThe students are expected to be on their best behavior and to represent us homeschoolers well. No running\, touching\, or loud noises. Backpacks are generally not a good idea (risk knocking into art displays). Older kids are encouraged to explore with their team. Younger kids should be supervised by parents. \nOur past themes have included art mediums\, shapes/patterns\, seasonal\, emotions\, etc. \nMy heart for creating this recurring event is for the students to develop a relationship with the art. One visit will not accomplish this. We intend to go back month after month to encourage the kids to notice details\, connections\, and similarities and differences. I encourage my kids to study to compositions closely so that they can store it in the art gallery of their minds. Art appreciation can inspire creative ambitions\, expose us to new thoughts and faraway cultures\, and teach us to slow down and absorb the details of our environment. Its really not about the art\, its about growth.
